Article analyses the processes of democratic consolidation in former Yugoslav republics period since volatile and violent breakup socialist Yugoslavia three decades ago. Author is putting an emphasis on notion economic all tests thesis that indeed one prerequisite suffered most direct effects failed peaceful transformation areas plunged into post-independence wars conflicts. confirms secret to resilience hidden development – not only, as some theories claimed back 1960s (Lipset, 1959, p. 69–105), various forms undemocratic rule, but a democracy built upon institutions, respect for human rights fundamental freedoms plus rule law.
